BANKS BUSTED

Cordinta reports from different cities, all the banks in the United States been stoppin paymenta money everywhere.
This is the latest development in the panic that resulted on March 4 when the big boom that went on in the stock markets for several years wound up in a big crash. When things were boomin, lotsa new manufactures, new canals, new land developments, even new cities, got started, an even that new contraption they call railroads got built all over the states, but now they aingot nothin to do, an the people aingot nothin to do neither. An now, since the midla October, the banks stopped payin money, cause no business means no cash.
An with everythin stopped like this, thes so many people unemployedat least two million already, an likely tabee that many more before this is over.
Reports from vessels comin across th'Atlantic indicate that England an Germany's got the same economic trouble as United States. It's claimed France is still doin business as usual, but America might wonder, cause France recently refused to pay her debt to United States.
As regular legal cash is hard taget in any American cities, lotsa companies, just takeep emselves goin somehow, started up a new kinda credit by coinin their own money for their customers, what the people call "hard times tokens."

CANADA IN REVOLT

Navy Island, Upper Canada, Oct. 23.A rebel government's been formed for Upper Canada, an theyve issued a proclamation in Toronto callin on everybody to overthrow the "Family Compact," a small buncha families that's got complete controllath government up here. Military rebel headquarters has got started in an inn a coupla miles outa Toronto, on the main road north, what they call Yonge Street. The whole Niagara peninsula an the north shora Lake Erie's gone over to the rebel side already.
St. Denis, Lower Canada. The French Canadian "Sons of Liberty" started a rebel government for Lower Canada, with Papineau, the former Speakera Parliament, for President. The flag's gonna be a blue one with two stars for the two Canadas, an the motto "Liberty and Equality." The Richelieu River region's all rebel, an thes been street fightin reported in Montreal.
Ogdensburg, N.Y.Thes been started here, an all along the Canadian border, a lotta huntin clubs for the fall season, but all they seem ta have in common with huntin is the guns. They bring up plentya guns to the border, an ever the guns seem to disappear cause theyre always needin more, an theyve hardly ever been seen huntin. But they are just in the right spots to smuggle guns over the border to the Canadian rebels.

BOSTON'S UNEMPLOYED

Boston, Mass.Thes been all kindsa work planned here tagive th'unemployed sompin to do while the panic's on. One is to fill in a lotta ground in the big tidal outlet called the Back Bay, the plan bein to extend Tremont Street along the new filled-in shore to Roxbury Crossin. Theyre also fillin in the Mill Pond between the North End an West end, so's they can bring the new Boston an Lowell Railroad right into Boston steada stoppin at Lechmere's Point in Cambridge. Theyre plannin a station on the Mill Pond causeway, an the streets in the filled-in disctrict's gonna have namesa places where the railroad heads to, like Merrimac, Lowell, Nashua, Billerica, etc. Question is, will the railroad be any good now, cause Lowell was onath towns that started up in the boom, an mosta its mills are shuttin down.
Theyre also tryinta put up cheap houses so people can still afford a place to stay. A new kinda buildin called "apartment house" got put up at the cornera Tremont an Boylston Streeta big four-story brick house, with everybody living in just a few rooms; other cities might try it if it works in Boston. Also theyre havin em put up lotsa shacks on Brookline's Charles River shore"cottages" is the fancy name for emin a new settlement for the unemployed, to be called Cottage Farm.
